Major Web Disruption Affects Dozens Online Platforms and Apps

An extensive internet outage has impacted dozens sites and applications worldwide, as users experiencing troubles connecting to the web after problems at the web hosting service.

The affected apps include the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-operated services such as its main retail platform and the Ring security device manufacturer.

Across the United Kingdom, the financial institution Lloyds was disrupted along with its subsidiaries Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were also reports of issues using the HM Revenue and Customs website on the start of the week. Also in the UK, many Ring users turned to online platforms to state their security devices were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, accounts of issues on specific platforms totaled the thousands for each app.

The company stated that the issue started in the Atlantic coast of the America at AWS, a unit that supplies essential online infrastructure for a host of firms, who lease capacity on AWS infrastructure. The cloud platform is the world’s largest cloud computing system.

Soon after late night (PDT) in the United States (8 in the morning BST), Amazon confirmed “higher error rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a zone on the east coast of the US. The cascading impact was seen to hit services worldwide, with the problem monitoring service showing problems with the same sites in various regions.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on internet outages, also reported a increase in problems on Monday morning, and numerous instances situated in the state of Virginia, the region of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the outage originated.
